was known as “Bloody Arm” Beckwourth
“Bloody Arm” Beckwourth was the original Bad MoFo.
He was born of mixed race into slavery, but later released by his owner/father.
He was a real Buffalo Soldier, Black Smith, Fur Trapper, Explorer, Trail Blazer, and later a rancher, hotel keeper, store keeper and author. He live with the Crow Nation for 8-9 years in Wyoming territory. And he is credited with the discovery of the Beckwourth Pass. A trail that cut through the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which was later used by thousands of settlers and gold seekers.
Not only did he have a variety of careers, but he also had numerous wives. One African American wife, and a few Native American wives.
While in the service he held the positions of U.S. Army wagon master, U.S. Army scout , Territorial militia scout.
Usually, movies are made of men like Bloody Arm. With the stories vast and intense.
From ascending to the highest-ranking war chieftaincy of the Crow Nation, to stealing nearly 1800 horses from the Mexican army. This man lead a very full and adventurous life.
Many books have been written about this frontiersman. His dictation of his memoirs is titled: “The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth: Mountaineer, Scout and Pioneer, and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians”.
So far no movies have been produced.
The city of Marysville did honor him by naming the towns largest park: The Beckwourth River front Park.
And the nickname? Supposedly it came from his skill as a fierce fighter.
