How Marysville Began

Marysville is the oldest city in the northern California.
In 1844 the area later to become Marysville started as a land grant to Theodore Cordua from the Mexican government and began as a trading post in the remote and wild west. He called the area New Mecklenburg. Since he himself was a transplant from Mecklenburg Germany. But the greater area was know as the Cordura Ranch.
In 1848, Charles Covillaud, a former employee of Cordua, discovered riches in the gold fields and bought half of the Cordua ranch….

Riverboat Transportation

Imagine it’s the 1800’s.  Long before airplanes, automobiles, even railroads. The only means of mass transit was the riverways.  Certainly a horse could get you over the trails, but the trip would be long and difficult, without the means to carry large loads. So travel by the masses with done so using the twists and turns of the rivers.
People would take them as far as they would go. And Marysville was that last stop up the river, all the way from San Francisco Bay. From the east, people moved by wagon train, over the mountainous terrain.
It was a deadly and difficult journey, fought with endless dangers. …

Gold Fever

1948 was they year they say gold was discovered in California. First in in the rivers, but later in the hills that feed the river in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Those miners who wanted to bypass Sacramento would often travel up the rivers to the last disembarkment on the riverbanks of the Yuba in the town of Marysville. The gold was abundant and flowed down the rivers that lead right to Marysville. Some say gold is present in the rivers that surround the city still.
When it comes to California gold mining history, most people are well versed in the history of towns like Sutters Creek, Sonora, Nevada City, Auburn, etc….
